Fredi Nester Esterhuizen, known to audiences as Fredi Nest, was born on 25 March 1959 in Johannesburg, South Africa. As the eldest of five children, he discovered music early, teaching himself guitar and developing a love for singing.
He began recording professionally in the mid‑1990s, releasing his first album, Memory Train, in 1995. Over the next twenty years, he released fourteen albums and a DVD, steadily gaining recognition in the Afrikaans music scene. His songs often blended heartfelt storytelling with accessible pop rhythms, moving easily between tender ballads and upbeat tracks.
Among his most loved works were "Getoor," "Sê My," "Meer En Meer," "Hey DJ," and "Bly Net Naby My," which reflected both his romantic sensibility and his ability to craft melodies that resonated with everyday listeners.
In May 2015, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and admitted to Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria. His illness progressed quickly, and he passed away on 3 July 2015 at the age of 56.
Fredi Nest left behind a body of work that continues to be remembered for its warmth and sincerity. His voice and songs remain part of South Africa’s musical heritage, cherished by fans who found comfort and joy in his music.
